Eva Keogan advises companies how to manage their social media, across all platforms. She teaches workshops and gives lectures on the subject. Here are her tips for building up a Twitter following:
Here are Eva Keogan’s social-media musts… all relevant to Twitter:
• Try to use the same name across all of your social media.
• Make sure that your profile picture is memorable and use the same avatar/photo across all of your social media.
• The ‘header’ on your Twitter profile should be interesting and colourful, representing your blog or your brand. On Twitter there is also a background: use this as an advertising hoarding. It could be comments, quotes, or your email. It could be your book cover or your ebook. It should be an insight into your world. Make sure that you use that previous digital real estate effectively.
• Avoid mismatched cover pages on Facebook/LinkedIn/YouTube/Google Plus: again, make sure that all of your social media matches up, so readers will know at a glance that it’s you.
• Make sure that your biography (bio) is complete and without mistakes. You have just 160 characters on your Twitter bio, so use them effectively. Explain who you are. You can also give people a flavour of the tweets they will get – for example: ‘Follow me for tweets about…’ Do make sure that you spellcheck the words. This is your online mini CV.
• Use keywords such as food, foodie, writer, blogger, author, published writer, chef, where you are based, the link to your blog. Add your location – this is very important.
• Make sure that you include your blog URL on your bio (obviously!). But also make a virtuous circle of social media by linking all of your differing social media feeds. For instance, if I Instagram something, it will go on to my public Facebook page, which will then feed on to my Twitter stream. See! One photo, three places that it will go.
